The death of firefighter Pierre Lacroix, in Montreal, on Oct. 17, will be the subject of a public inquiry. The procedure was ordered Thursday by Quebec’s chief coroner, Me Pascale Descary.
Firefighter Lacroix, married with two children, died during a water rescue near Lachine Rapids. Along with three companions, he helped two boats in distress.
The fireboat capsized and Mr. Lacroix under the boat and drowned.
Coroner Me Géhane Kamel was appointed to lead the inquest. He will be assisted by Me Dave Kimpton, Public Inquiry Attorney.
The public inquiry aims to shed light on the possible causes and circumstances of Mr. Lacroix’s death.
Recommendations can also be made following the investigation, to prevent other deaths in similar circumstances.
Testimonials will be collected about the mission of the nautical rescue and prevention team, their intervention methods and their means of communication.
