The trial of Jamal Borhot has been postponed for a year to allow his new lawyer to learn more about the case. The defendant returned to court on Friday.
The Calgarian faces three counts related to terrorism. He is accused of traveling to Syria to commit terrorist acts.
His trial date was first set for October 2022, but his former lawyer gave up defending him. The new lawyer who took over the case asked for more time to learn more about the case.
The new four -week trial is scheduled to begin on October 3, 2023.
A seven -year investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) led to the indictment against Jamal Borhot.
Police accused him of being involved in terrorist activities for the benefit of the terrorist group known as Islamic State (IS) in 2013 and 2014.
His cousin confessed to the guilt
Jamal Borhot’s cousin, Hussein Sobhe Borhot, was also charged with similar offenses.
