Coroner Jean Brochu just filed his report on the accident that claimed the life of young Emily Villeneuve in Saint-Majorique-de-Grantham on October 8, 2021. He issued a recommendation to the municipality to prevent repetition of such drama.
The 13-year-old woman was walking on Saint-Joseph Boulevard around 7 p.m. when she was struck by a sport utility vehicle (SUV). At the time of the impact, he moved into the traffic lane to give direction to a truck driver who was not moving on the other side of the road.
The driver of the SUV was blinded by the headlight of the truck and he could no longer see the victim wearing dark colored clothing in the poorly lit area.
Coroner Brochu recommends that the municipality take all possible means to limit the risks for vulnerable users.
However, the municipality did not wait for the filing of the coroner’s report to act, Mayor Line Fréchette said.
The demographics of the municipality have increased over the years, so traffic is more dense than ever. We put up speed bumps, bike paths. There is still a lot to do. We have given the mandate to a company, we are in discussions to reduce risks to a minimumhe pointed out.
The street light will also be put on shortly at the location where the accident occurred.
Until these measures are implemented, the municipality urges all users of the sector to exercise caution.
