A building of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada in Edmonton was damaged on Friday morning, and swastikas were painted in several areas of the building.
Footage recorded by the building’s surveillance cameras shows a hooded man painting symbols around 3 a.m. Friday morning, said Marco Levytsky, the respective secretary of the federation in Edmonton.
George Yopyk, a longtime member of the federation and former Edmonton branch president, said he was shocked to discover the act of vandalism while parking his car on Friday morning. I can not believe!
George Yopyk also said he first thought about how he would respond to children who had to attend a play at night if he was asked what these symbols meant.
Two swastikas are painted on either side of the building’s entrance, while two more appear on a banner that reads: Stop Putin. Stop the war.
Opening an investigation
In a press release, the President of the Ukrainian Congress of Canada, Orysia Boychuk, said that his organization was shocked by this action and called on the police to investigate this incident as a hate crime.
Edmonton Police Services spokeswoman Cheryl Voordenhout said police are investigating the incident.
