Report: Alberto Bombig – Bolsonaro wants Damares as an electoral cable among conservative religious

Former minister Damares Alves left Jair Bolsonaro’s government with a mission given to him directly by the President: to become the main electoral leader among the religious constituencies of his own candidates and his former Esplanada colleagues.
Newly linked to Republicans, Damares will travel the country asking religious leaders, especially evangelicals, to help Bolsonaro be re-elected. The states will act for João Rome (Republicans) in Bahia, Onyx Lorenzoni (PL) in Rio Grande do Sul, and Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas (Republicans) in São Paulo. There will be three candidates for governor of the state.
The former Minister of Family, Women’s and Human Rights is an evangelical pastor and representative of conservative thinking in Brazil, specifically the so-called “traditional agenda”, including gender issues. According to Planalto members, the breadth of its influence is not limited to evangelicals and encompasses a significant slice of the country’s right-wing voters, regardless of religious choice.
Whenever possible, Damares will be assisted by Brazil’s First Lady, Michelle Bolsonaro. Despite leaving the ministry within the time limit set by the election law, Damares has yet to decide whether to run this year.
