The public inquiry into the mass shooting in Nova Scotia has already cost $ 25.6 million to investigate the April 18-19, 2020 murder. There are still about five months left in the mandate.

Survey costs are shared between the federal and provincial governments. The work of the commission of inquiry began in October 2020 and public hearings began on February 22, 2022.

The investigation focused on the causes and circumstances that led to the shooting of 22 people over 13 hours by a gunman driving a replica police vehicle. The investigation is expected to recommend ways to help prevent and respond to similar incidents in the future.

According to the breakdown of expenditures shown through March 31, 2022, the survey spent nearly $ 2.9 million in the 2020-2021 fiscal year, and in the previous fiscal year, $ 22.7 million was spent.

An estimated $ 9.5 million was paid for salaries and benefits for 68 employees.

Chief Commissioner Michael mac donald received up to $ 2,000 per day and the two commissioners, Leanne Fitch and Kim Stanton$ 1800 per day.

Part of the commission’s budget funds the cost of attorneys representing victims ’family members.

So far, this portion of expenditures is approximately $ 2.5 million.
