Muscular arrest in Campbellton: mayor wants answers

The muscular arrest of an individual by an RCMP officer in Campbellton, New Brunswick, last July, still has not led to a conclusion. The city mayor believes the wait has been long and he is asking for answers.

The arrest erupted on social media in July 2021: a police officer was shown in a video RCMP several times struck another man, caught on the ground by a third individual.

A few days later, demonstrators even demanded justice for André Mercier, the man in his thirties from Campbellton who had been beaten.

To avoid any conflict of interest, the investigation was conducted by the Quebec Bureau of Independent Investigations, which submitted its report to the province nearly a month later.

Since then, the file has been in the New Brunswick Attorney General’s office in Fredericton.

From the incident, the police officer involved was assigned to administrative duties pending the decision of the New Brunswick Public Prosecution Service.

Ang RCMP still refused to comment further on the matter.

The province states in its part that a new Crown prosecutor needs to be reassigned to the file and the review of the file has not yet been completed.
