Andoni Lakabeg wore Athletic’s number 2 during the 1995-96 campaign. From there, from 1996-97 to 2000-01, there were five consecutive seasons in which no lion wanted to wear that number. Everything was due to mere superstition, since some carriers of said number had suffered their respective injuries.
Larrainzar, who previously wore 21, ended up donning 2 during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 campaigns. Murillo took the baton. Then Houses. Expósito also wore that number the following three seasons (from 2005-06 to 2007-08).
Then came Toquero’s turn. The striker from Gasteiz, a charismatic footballer during his well-used stage at Athletic, wore said number from 2008-09 to 2014-15. Bóveda took over from 2 for three consecutive seasons. From there it was the turn of Kenan Kodro, Ganea, Morcillo and now Petxa, respectively.
