A father from Val-des-Sources pleaded guilty Monday morning at Sherbrooke courthouse to charges of aggravated assault on his one-and-a-half-month-old baby.
According to evidence submitted by the Crown prosecutor, the 24-year-old man caused 38 fractures to his son. The publication ban prohibits us from identifying the father to protect the child.
The arms, femurs, ribs and shins, among others, were broken. The wounds were made within a few days. The doctor who testified at the man’s initial hearing said he was not there never seen so many fractures in a child.
These injuries are not caused by shaken baby syndrome. Abuse movements, winding, squeezing, pulling on the legs that caused some fracturesexplanation of the Crown prosecutor, Marie-Andrée Ayotte.
The events took place in October 2020. The baby was taken to the hospital emergency room because he had a fever.
Since then, the man has been undergoing therapy at Seuil de l’Estrie, an organization that specializes in anger management. The Department of Youth Protection is also on file. However, the father no longer had contact with his son or his ex -wife.
Fortunately, the child’s condition is fine and he will not have any consequences of the tragic events, according to the parties involved.
The defense lawyer, Me Alexandre Tardif, asked the judge to commute his sentence next October to allow the man to work this summer as part of a seasonal job. Lawyers will suggest a prison sentence. He will return to court on Oct. 17.
