The defense tried to convince the jurors that the two men killed the hunters in self -defense. He said Anthony Bilodeau had a real and reasonable fear for his safety as well as that of his father and his younger brother.

The Crown argued that the defendants took the law into their own hands by pursuing Jacob Sansom and his uncle Maurice Cardinal because they believed the two men were hunting their land and trying to steal it.

Jacob Sansom, 33, and Maurice Cardinal, 58, died on March 27, 2020, in Glendon, 215 kilometers northeast of Edmonton, after a day of moose hunting.
