The second of two senior officials who responded to the mass shooting that killed 22 people in Nova Scotia in 2020 testified on Tuesday about his role in responding to the RCMP. But again, the public won’t hear what Sergeant Andy O’Brien has to say until after today’s interrogation.
Last week, the Board of Inquiry granted special accommodations to Mr O’Brien and Staff Sergeant Brian Rehill due to unspecified health issues, prompting protests from most relatives. of victims.
Mr. Rehill, who testified Monday, and Mr. O’Brien also obtained a waiver from cross-examination by attorneys representing the victims’ families.
Mr. Rehill was the RCMP risk manager on duty when the killer rampage began in Portapique, Nova Scotia on the night of April 18, 2020, while Mr. O’Brien is the operations non-commissioned officer of the Colchester district.
The inquest heard that Mr O’Brien was on no duty at the time and he had been drinking four or five glasses of rum at home within four hours when he found out what was going on at Portapique.
Mr O’Brien later confirmed that he had recovered his portable radio from the detachment – with the help of his wife – and gave advice to response officers.
The inquest heard that there was confusion as to who was actually responsible that night, leading to a significant communication problems.
