Strong streamflow advisories were released Thursday for much of northern British Columbia, where residents must prepare for possible flooding.
The Provincial Flood Forecasting Center says warmer temperatures accelerate snow melting, which raises water levels.
It affects the Skeena River, which flows into the Terrace, the Stikine River in northwestern British Columbia, and the Liard River, which originates in the Yukon and flows into the northeastern part of the province. The Peace River watershed has also been the subject of a watch.
The situation is forcing authorities to ask the population to prepare for possible flooding.
In a joint statement, the Ministry of Public Security and the Provincial Office of Emergency Management said this week’s warming weather brings with it the highest weather temperatures and is likely to have moderate to heavy rain this weekend. of the week.
These forecasts prompted the City of Terrace to open its emergency operations center on Wednesday, to be prepared if necessary.
Sandbags will also be available to residents starting Thursday at Thornhill Fire Station.
