The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has found no reasonable basis to believe that an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer committed a criminal offense when he punched a man in the winter of 2022.

On January 9, the POP was called to intervene at a residential health center when a man damaged property and threatened staff members, summarizes a statement from the oversight body for Ontario police forces.

When arrested, the 64-year-old resisted and tried to strike one of the officers. The officer responded by punching him twice in the face and pinching him to the ground.

The individual was arrested under Mental Health Act and for nonsense.

SIU opened an investigation on Feb. 3 after POP informed him of the incident. The director [de l’UES, Joseph] Martino, found no reasonable basis to believe that the subject officer acted unlawfully in his relationship with the manend of Unit.

The file is now closed.
