A judge on Tuesday ordered the release of Tony Accurso. The fallen businessman went to jail a few days ago, after exhausting his recourses in front of Quebec courts. Found guilty of a major case of corruption of municipal officials in Laval, he was sentenced to four years in prison in July 2018.
In his decision, Judge Manon Savard of the Quebec Court of Appeal said that the crimes for which the applicant has been convicted are certainly serious and serious.
However, the magistrate wrote, these were not violent crimes against the person or crimes likely to endanger public safety, especially since the applicant was no longer involved in the management of the companies.
For Justice Savard, public safety or the risk of Mr. Accurso’s escape does not constitute a significant risk.
Ultimately, Judge Savard decided, I believe the applicant should be released.
However, the judge denied Tony Accurso permission to visit his son in British Columbia. In my opinion, at the present time, the applicant should not leave Quebecthe judge considers the conditions accompanying the applicant’s release.
The conditions in question also state that Mr. Accurso may not speak to the nearly forty persons named in the judgment, except in the presence of his attorney for the purpose of legal preparation.
