A 51-year-old man died after an incident with the National Steel Car

A 51-year-old man died after an incident at the National Steel Car workplace in Hamilton on June 6th.

The coroner’s office and the Ministry of Labor opened an investigation. Emergency services were called to the scene at 7:50 pm Monday.

The man was taken to a local hospital without vital signs by paramedics who continued resuscitation efforts along the route, said Dave Thompson of Hamilton paramedics.

A bulkhead weighing approximately 900 kg (2,000 lbs) fell in the incident, Hamilton police said.

National Steel Car did not comment on the investigation at the time of publication, but posted a message on its Facebook page that the Monday night shift and Tuesday day shift had been canceled.

This is the third death in National Steel Car over the past two years.

The Steelworkers Union asked the Ministry of Labor to conduct a health and safety inspection on National Steel Car following the last two deaths. According to the union, Fraser Cowan died on September 2, 2020 and Collin Grayley died on April 23, 2021.
