Two suspects, ages 19 and 17, were arrested on June 2 and face about 100 charges in connection with recent armed robberies in Toronto, police said.
Inspector Richard Harris on Wednesday announced the first results of Project ZigZag, an investigation into a series of carjacking actions that have rocked the Greater Toronto Area since May.
Two suspects attempted to steal at least ten vehicles between May 15 and May 26, according to police. Eight of the thefts took place in the city of Toronto while two more took place in the Durham Region, police said.
On June 2, they were observed in a surveillance operation while driving one of the vehicles stolen in one of the hijackings, the inspector explained. So they were arrested and it went without incident.
In those thefts, the suspect was armed with a gun and approached the victims to ask for their keys, Harris said. At least one other suspect was in a nearby getaway vehicle.
Tyliq Jones, 19, of Brampton, faces 11 counts of robbery, 11 counts of disguising with intent and 11 counts of failing to comply with a Youth Criminal Justice Act decision, suggesting he already has a criminal record.
Another suspect, a 17-year-old minor, benefits from the anonymity given to him by his age. He faces the same charges as his alleged accomplice, but will have to defend himself against 12 other counts of non -compliance with an acknowledgment.
