The author of the attacks in Old Quebec, Carl Girouard, was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole before 2045, Friday, at the Quebec courthouse.
Judge Richard Grenier first recalled the seriousness and effects of the acts committed by Girouard before giving his decision.
Previously, relatives of the victims were invited to speak. Carl Girouard would not comment.
The 26-year-old man was found criminally responsible for the murders of François Duchesne, 56, and Suzanne Clermont, 61, on May 20. He also injured five on Halloween night 2020.
Carl Girouard’s lawyer, Me Pierre Gagnon, filed a notice of appeal of the verdict against his client this Friday morning.

The Supreme Court of Canada recently repealed a provision of the Criminal Code that made it possible to accumulate periods of ineligibility for parole.
As such, this decision prevents Girouard from receiving a period of disqualification of more than 25 years.
More details to come.
