A former teacher in Newfoundland and Labrador has been sentenced to four years in prison for sexually assaulting and exploiting one of his high school students, whose identity is subject to a publication ban.

Noel Strapp, 39, was convicted in February 2022. He finally received his sentence on Tuesday, in Newfoundland’s Saint John county court.

The Crown recommended five years imprisonment, while the defense upheld between 22 and 24 months.

The complainant was 16 years old when they first had sex. She estimates she already has about 100 sexual intercourse Noel Strapp.

More than 8,000 text messages they sent to each other over the eight years of their relationship were put into evidence during the trial.

The jury Phyllis Harris said in February that the case depended almost solely on the credibility of the maiden’s testimony, which she considered credible.
