On average, in Quebec, youth protection (DPJ) directors recorded 363 situations of children that were the subject of a report every day, out of a total of 132,632 reports in 2021-2022.
In the province, this represents an increase of 12.5% compared to last year, said Assunta Gallo, DPJ director of CIUSSS du Center-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal. .
Si Ms. Gallo, who presented Tuesday in Montreal the Directorate of Youth Protection’s 19th annual report, said that of all these reports, the DPJ retained nearly 43,700.
Compared to the year 2020-2021, it dropped by 2.3% in the reports retained.
According to Ms. Gallo, the DPJ responded quickly to the most urgent cases, but the less urgent ones experienced increased waiting.
In addition, special services are not always available for children and youth who are in the crosshairs of the DPJ, he lamented.
For the DPJ of the CIUSSS du Center-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, nearly 13,000 reports were produced in 2021-2022, an increase of 8% compared to the previous year.
As for the Batshaw Youth and Family Centers, the increase in the number of reports was more marked: it rose to 16% for a total of 4,645 reports. (Attached to the CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, these centers offer their services in English to Montrealers and in the same official language to members of the Jewish community ).
More than two-thirds of children in Quebec cared for by DYP in 2021-2022 remained in their family environment or had a significant third.
In addition, nearly 7,500 youth received services under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
