The value of the staple food basket has soared in many of the country’s capitals. São Paulo tops the list with an average cost of R$761.
It is followed by Rio de Janeiro at R$750.71 and Florianópolis at R$745.47. In Curitiba, it rose more than 7% in a month. Curitiba ranks 8th with an average food basket price of R$701.59.
The survey was published this Wednesday (6th) by Dieese of the Inter-Association Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies Department.
The ministry calculated the basic set of goods that each city’s population must pay in March to purchase products such as rice, beans, pasta and soybean oil.
In Curitiba, the second highest increase of 7.46% in 30 days among the 17 cities surveyed, after Rio de Janeiro with 7.65%.
Items driving the increase include tomatoes in the capital city of Paraná, which recorded an increase of around 58% in March alone.
Beans, soybean oil, French bread and cassava flour rank the most in the province.
Sandro Silva, researcher and economist at Dieese explains that the low supply of some products as well as the increase in production costs affect prices.
Comparing the value of the basket for 12 months, i.e. March 2021, and March this year, also showed that all capitals experienced price increases in Aracaju, with variations ranging from 12% to about 30%. Wide area.
Given the values, Dieese points out that in order to cover all the basic costs for survival, such as food, education and food, the worker must receive at least 5 times the prevailing minimum wage (R$ 1,212).
