Environment Canada issued a weather alert for southern Quebec on Thursday afternoon. Extreme lightning and tornado hazards have an impact in many areas.
These alerts specifically target the metropolitan regions of Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, as well as Montérégie, the Laurentians, Lanaudière, Mauricie and Outaouais.
The tornado watch focuses on the regions of Gatineau, Pontiac, Saint-Jérôme, Mont-Tremblant, Laurentides and Lanaudière.
The hot and humid weather predicted by Environment Canada would be conducive to the formation of severe thunderstorms. Strong winds, heavy rain and ice are expected in these regions.
Conditions will be met for some tornadoes to form, causing gusts of 90 to 110 km/h, and hail that can vary in size between a 5 cent coin on a ping pong ballsays Environment Canada on its website.
Environment Canada recommends that residents of areas where alerts are issued stay indoors and stay away from exterior walls.
