The case was filed Thursday in an investigation that has been going on for more than 10 years into alleged attacks on the former Fort Alexander Indian residential school, northeast of Winnipeg.
Provincial authorities have confirmed that a man has been charged with indecent assault on a woman.
The Fort Alexander residential school opened in 1905 in the community of the same name, which later became Sagkeeng First Nation, and closed in 1970.
Police said RCMP officials began looking into the former boarding school case in 2010 and began a criminal investigation the following year.
The investigation reviewed the boarding school’s records, along with the list of students and employees. Officials also interviewed more than 700 people across North America.
Indecent assault charges filed as Sagkeeng First Nation discovered 190 anomalies in school grounds on June 6 (New window). Preliminary data seem to suggest that these anomalies may describe the presence of unmarked graves.
Fort Alexander boarding school has a reputation for abuse. Survivors testified before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, recalling the brutal methods of discipline and starvation experienced by the children.
While it was still operating, more than twenty children from approximately a dozen First Nations attended the Fort Alexander residential school for nearly 10 months a year.
