The fraud associated with the false sale of containers took place last month in Quebec. Two people have reported being victims of this type of theft in recent weeks, but Quebec police believe there may be more.
Scammers take advantage of a global shortage of containers to promote them cheaply on the Internet.
They can, for example, create a fraudulent site that mimics in every way the site of a real company. They replace phone numbers and email addresses with their own numbersexplanation in a Police Department press release.
A fraudster contacted a potential buyer and tried to convince him to pay for the container via electronic transfer.
Once payment has been made, victims no longer receive delivery. This fraud affects any type of container, whether maritime or construction.
