The Sûreté du Québec is calling on recreational vehicle users to be careful as many are preparing to hit the road for the summer vacation.
The SQ insists on the importance of adopting responsible and safe behavior to reduce the risk of accidents.
According to the police force, in the majority of cases, human behavior is the cause of an accident on a quad or in a nautical craft when practicing a nautical activity.
Speed, careless actions, or the use of drugs or alcohol can make a big difference in crashes and people not putting on their life jackets can cause multiple drowningsexplains Sergeant Nancy Fournier, spokesperson for the SQ.
Police officers want to make all recreational vehicle users aware of the importance of respecting laws and regulations.
The experience factor is also to be taken into account, insists Sergeant Nancy Fournier.
Another factor that often contributes to crashes and bad situations is driver inexperience. When people decide to buy a recreational vehicle, it is very important to know not only the regulations in force, but also the mandatory equipment as well as their handling. The hope is that people will either take a few hours with an experienced person so they can demonstrate exactly how the contraption works, but also can take some courses to be able to handle the deviceshe says.
Since the beginning of the year, the SQ has recorded one quad death and seven boating deaths.
