Experienced member of Whistler rescue team goes missing near Pemberton

An experienced member of Whistler’s volunteer search and rescue team has been missing for three days, prompting an extensive effort to find him in the backcountry around Pemberton, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have announced.

The RCMP of Pemberton issued a missing persons notice Friday morning saying Toby Salin, 51, had not been seen or heard from since around 9 a.m. Thursday.

His pickup truck, a black 2021 Chevrolet Crewcab, was located near West Lillooet Lake Roadalong a forest service road in a remote area southeast of Pemberton.

So far, research that includes members of Pemberton Search and Rescuea helicopter and police officers RCMPStl’atl’imx Tribal Police and local residents, were unable to locate Toby Salin.

On Saturday, Brad Sills, chair of the Whistler Volunteer Search and Rescue Team, said in an email that volunteers are looking for Toby Salin along the river. Lower Lillooet.

Toby Salin joined the team over eight years ago and is a beloved member, he wrote. Brad Sills says Toby Salin has backcountry experience as an avid mountain biker, skier and snowmobiler. He hopes the man is simply indulging in his leisure time.

His disappearance along the remote stretch of the Forest Service Road is not abnormal, as he was likely planning his next big adventure in the mountains he loves so much. Our hearts are with Toby right now.

The RCMP describes Toby Salin as being five feet nine or 175cm tall, weighing 200 pounds or 90 kilograms, having short blonde hair and blue eyes.
