The English coach, Gareth Southgate, has received the support of his Federation after the calamitous start of the ‘pross’ in the Nations League. Bottom of the group, they have conceded historic defeats this June against Hungary (1-0 and 0-4) and two 1-1 defeats against Italy and Germany.

Some disappointing results that leave England with many options to finish last in the group in the two days that remain to be played in September and relegation to League B of the Nations League.

Five months before the start of the World Cup in Qatar, Southgate has seen his reputation tarnished by an adoring public after leading England to the 2021 European Championship final and fourth place in the 2018 World Cup.

Confidence before the World Cup

“We have confidence in Gareth and I think it’s important. It’s particularly important as we approach the most important of all tournaments,” said Debbie Hewitt, FA president since January.

Hewitt praised Southagte, saying “resilience and a sense of responsibility are the two qualities I most admire in him. He never slumps, he never sighs… That’s what you expect from an English manager.”

“It’s refreshing to work with someone like that, because their willingness to learn (from bad experiences) is quite remarkable and quite unusual, regardless of their background,” Hewitt continued based on his experience in the business world.

glowing praise

He also urged not to forget the past too quickly. “Gareth, by his results, is the most successful England coach in 55 years,” he recalled in reference to the World Cup won in 1966, the only title so far achieved by the ‘pross’.

“What people don’t see too much of is the Gareth of camps and the culture he has created. Before Gareth was England manager, there was no pride in wearing the shirt. There were rivalries between clubs, as we have read. The players they didn’t get along,” Hewitt recalled. “He changed all of that beyond anything you can imagine and I witnessed it in person,” the FA president concluded.
