The Winnipeg Police Service says the remains discovered in the Brady Road landfill on June 14 are those of Rebecca Contois. Authorities were looking for other parts of the body of the young woman found dead in the North Kildonan area on May 16.
In a press release, the police indicate that the relatives of the victim have been informed and that the Homicide Unit is continuing its investigation.
The Winnipeg Police Service had secured a perimeter inside the landfill. The authorities believe that the remains of Ms. Contois were transported there during a household waste collection operation.
Winnipeg Police Inspector Cam MacKid said in a news conference last week that search teams searched a perimeter equivalent to four to six football fields.
Weather conditions and preparation work had delayed the start of the search until June 2.
Winnipeg police arrested Jeremy Skibicki in mid-May in the case. He was charged with the first degree murder of Ms. Contois. Mr. Skibicki was expressing his support for openly racist groups on social media.
In May, police said there may be other victims linked to the investigation.
Ms. Contois was a member of Crane River First Nation. She is one of three aboriginal women killed in Winnipeg over two weeks in May.
