The New Brunswick RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating the homicide of a man from the Esgenoôpetitj First Nation, formerly known as Burnt Church.
On June 2, at approximately 1:15 p.m., the Neguac RCMP Detachment received a noise complaint regarding a residence on Algonquin Road, Esgenoôpetitj First Nation.
Upon arrival, officers found a man with gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of serious life-threatening injuries.
The suspect had fled the scene before police arrived.
A little later, a 27-year-old man was arrested on First Nation territory. A prohibited weapon was seized.
On June 3, Dylan Dedam of Esgenoôpetitj First Nation appeared in Provincial Court in Miramichi. He was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon. He remains in detention.
On June 12, the victim of this armed attack, Joshua Ian Robichaud who is 36 years old and who is from the First Nation of Esgenoôpetitj, died in the hospital.
An autopsy was performed to determine the exact cause of his death; the investigation has now established that the man was the victim of a homicide.
The RCMP Major Crimes Unit is seeking information regarding this incident.
The investigation is continuing.
