England sweated to catch up with Spain at the top of the U19 Euro Cup record. Israel, the surprise of the competition, did not give any kind of facilities to a group of players who had to wait until minute 109 to get on track title.
Even England had to turn a scoreboard against them with Israel’s strike just before half-time. It was marked by Óscar Gloukh, who signed a work of art to complete a counterattack. With astonishing aplomb, he dodged past two defenders inside the box to beat goalkeeper Matthew Cox with an unstoppable cross shot.
England draw after the break
England was able to recover after the break. Israel, which played the first final in its history, received a jug of cold water at the exit of a corner that Doyle did not miss after a couple of rebounds inside the small area that the Israeli defense failed to clear.
Already in extra time, Israel’s timorous defense again gave away a goal that gave England the title. Carney Chukwuemeka, with his shoulder, put the ball into the goal after it had wandered into the area after a Harvey Vale cross from the right flank.
Israel still had one last chance to tie the match, but Gloukh, the best player of his team throughout the tournament, with the whole goal to score, missed his shot to the despair of his teammates, who at 115 minutes sank the knee with Aaron Ramsey’s goal
Europe already has a new Under 19 king and his name is England. Surely some of their players, in the future, will be a good representative of their generation as other champions of the category in the past were.
Champions who made people talk
The list is long: Hugo Lloris (2005), Sergio Ramos and David Silva (2004), Giorgio Chiellini (2003), Gerard Piqué (2006), Andrés Iniesta and Fernando Torres (2002), Joshua Kimmich (2014), Antoine Griezmann (2010) or Kylian Mbappé (2016) were and are references. Players like Chukwuemeka hope to pick up the baton.
