Just a few hours before Tevez was presented on June 21 as coach of Rosario Central, Retegui announced that he would not be able to accompany him as first assistant due to his position in the Government of the City of Buenos Aires as Secretary of Sports. A decision that did not sit well with the ‘Apache’.
Retegui triumphed as a field hockey player by participating in three Olympic Games (1996, 2002, 2004) and winning three gold medals (1991, 1995, 2003) and one silver (1999) at the Pan American Games. As a coach he was also successful with CD Terrassa as well as with both the Argentine men’s and women’s national teams. He then made the leap to politics but had committed to Tevez thus fulfilling his desire to go to football.
“He preferred a political commitment more than a dream”
“Retegui was careless, because he preferred a political commitment more than his dream. Not only did he break his word to me, but also to my brothers and my family. I found out that he was not going to come to Central because of the journalists, so that hurt me a lot,” said Tevez after losing on Monday to Aldosivi (2-1) and continuing Rosario in penultimate place in the Argentine championship at , reaping two defeats in his two games with Carlitos on the bench.
Tevez added: “I accept that the Retegui thing was careless, because I expected him to come up front and say it to my face. I am more surprised than anyone who is not here, but he prioritized politics more and in that he failed many people. Soccer is not for shitheads, you have to put your chest up and go to the front”.
Tevez, blunt
When analyzing what Retegui would have contributed to Rosario Central, Tevez stated: “We knew about Central’s situation. I’m convinced. If not, he wouldn’t be here. It could go wrong or well. We decided to grab it. He was always there when the time came , to go together and quit. It was his dream. That’s why we had been working. It was going to be important because he was going to have a different vision. He came from hockey and knew about other types of movements than football. Now the most important thing is that we continue forward, but I don’t talk to him anymore”.
Tevez recalls that the day before his appointment he saw Central’s defeat against Vélez (2-0) on the spot with Retegui and insists: “I no longer speak with a person who acted in that way. What can you speak? I have my say. I have it when I give it. Many wanted me not to grab Central, but nobody manages my life. If I give my word, I keep it.”
