After this agreement, Sterling will sign a contract until 2027, with the option of an additional year, to complete the operation and will become Chelsea’s first signing since the end of May, the American tycoon Todd Boehly became its owner since the consortium he heads bought the club from Roman Abramovich.
Sterling, 27, began his career at Liverpool and in July 2015 signed for Manchester City in exchange for 63 million euros. Since then he has become a key player in the ‘citizens’ titles, with whose shirt he has scored 131 goals in 337 games. His contract expired in 2023.
Four Premier with City
Last season he played 47 games in all competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing 9 assists, a contribution that helped him win his fourth Premier League at the Etihad (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022).
In addition, he has also achieved an FA Cup (2019), four League Cups (2016, 2019, 2020, 2021) and a Community Shield (2019). In 2020 he lost the Champions League final against Chelsea, the team he now joins.
In the shadow of Foden and Grealish
However, Sterling fell last season in the pecking order of Pep Guardiola, who preferred Phil Foden or Jack Grealish on the left flank.
Thus, Sterling was not a starter in any of the Champions League semi-final matches against Real Madrid and was only in six of the last eleven Premier League games.
