The Ukrainian championship will start on August 23 despite the Russian invasion, announced today Vadym Gutzeit, Minister of Youth and Sports. The matches will be played on Ukrainian territory, but without spectators and compulsorily respecting the decreed security regulations.

“During the airstrikes the matches will be interrupted and the players, coaches and staff will have to quickly move to a shelter,” Gutzeit revealed.
Much of the sports infrastructure was damaged by attacks by Vladimir Putin’s troops and many foreign players fled Ukrainian territory after the Russian invasion began on February 24.
No games since December
Last season the Ukrainian championship, which like every year entered its winter break in December, was no longer resumed due to the Russian invasion and on April 26 it was definitively suspended by decision of the football authorities, who agreed to leave the title void despite the fact that Shakhtar Donetsk was the leader at the time of the break.
