According to the leadership race website, this step was successfully completed by at least eight contenders, such as Pierre Poilievre – considered a favorite in this race -, Jean Charest, Patrick Brown, Leslyn Lewis, Roman Baber, Scott Aitchison, Leona Alleslev and Marc Dalton.

However, other names may be added in the coming days, the director general warned Conservative Party of CanadaWayne Benson, according to whom the verifications remain to be made.

Four other candidates have announced their intentions in recent weeks without appearing on the party’s official list. They were businessmen Joseph Bourgault and Bobby Singh as well as lawyers Joel Etienne and Grant Abraham.

Candidates now have 10 days to finish the second round of the leadership contest. By April 29 at 5 pm ET, they should have collected 500 signatures and raised $ 300,000, consisting of $ 200,000 in registration fees and $ 100,000 in compliance deposit (refundable).

Only Pierre Poilievre, Jean Charest and Leslyn Lewis have taken this step so far, making them candidates certified of the party.

Others may lay down their arms at that time. According to The Canadian Press, the teams of Leona Alleslev and Marc Dalton, among others, are far from raising the required $ 300,000. These two candidates were also the last to qualify under the first deadline imposed on aspiring chefs.

Three debates next month

Furthermore, the Conservative Party of Canada confirmed on Monday that the party’s first two official debates will take place on Wednesday, May 11 in Edmonton (in English) and Wednesday, May 25 in Montreal (in French). If necessary, a third official debate can be added at the beginning of August, a few weeks before the vote is held on September 10.

Meanwhile, a first debate in English, unofficial this time, is being organized on Thursday, May 5 in Ottawa by the Canada Strong and Free network, a Conservative pressure group founded by former Reform leader Preston Manning.

This is the third leadership contest Conservative Party of Canada in five years. This was made necessary by the ejection of Erin O’Toole in February.

The names of several potential successors circulated in the days that followed without the candidates in question leading the way. Peter MacKay, Tasha Kheiriddin, Michael Chong and Vincent Guzzo, in particular, decided to pass their turn.
