The Liberal government will now ban Russians authorized for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine from entering Canada.
The government filed proposed changes to federal immigration law in the Senate on Tuesday to ensure that foreign nationals facing sanctions under the Special Economic Measures Act are barred from entering Canada.
The changes will allow the Canada Border Services Agency to deny entry and remove individual sanctions, and allow Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada officials to deny visas.
Once implemented, the changes will apply to all foreign nationals subject to Canadian sanctions, as well as their accompanying family members.
Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine began in late February, Canada has allowed more than 1,000 people from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Federal Minister of Public Security Marco Mendicino said the access ban for relatives and key supporters of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime was one of many ways for Canada to hold Moscow accountable for its unwarranted aggression.
