The former mayor of Longueuil, Caroline St-Hilaire, is jumping into the realm of provincial politics. He will be a candidate for the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) to ride to Sherbrooke in the next election.
He is expected to officially announce his candidacy in the coming weeks.
In February 2017, Ms. St-Hilaire that he is leaving municipal politics and will no longer seek a new mandate.
Caroline St-Hilaire became, on November 1, 2009, the first mayor in the history of Quebec’s fourth largest city.
He defeated his opponent, notary Jacques Goyette (45.7%), who won 51.4% of the vote. Still leading the Action Longueuil party in the ensuing election, in 2013, he won town hall with 90.77% of the vote.
Born in Longueuil, Ms. St-Hilaire his political career on the federal scene where he was the Bloc Québécois MP (1997-2009) for the ride to Longueuil-Pierre-Boucher for 11 years.
