According to a press release published by Minister Rouleau’s office, this new research chair is intended to complement efforts Quebec has made in recent months to counter the rise of gun violence in the greater Montreal area.

In September, the Legault government injected more than $ 90 million into the police fight against the proliferation of weapons on the streets of major cities by creating Operation Centaur. At least an additional $ 52 million has also been allocated to crime prevention, particularly among young people.

This new research chair will provide more data and information on this type of crime.

The creation of this chair […] encourage knowledge sharing, through knowledge mobilization and science dissemination activities, while supporting the training of researchers on this themeexplanation by the scientific director of the Quebec Research Fund – Society and Culture, Louise Poissant.

We came to enhance our actions by relying on metropolis-specific expertise: the scientific community and universitiesdeclared Minister Chantal Rouleau, who spoke Thursday at the Urbanity and marginalized youth symposium, organized by the Multicultural Café-Jeunesse de Montréal-Nord.

We want to promote a better understanding of issues related to armed violence in the metropolitan area to better guide decisions. With this kind of tool the metropolis will continue to be the safest city we know.

A quote from Chantal Rouleau, Minister responsible for the Metropolis and the Montreal region

This announcement comes as criminal events involving guns are rapidly increasing in Montreal and in the suburbs, specifically in Laval, where three shootings in three days were reported last week.

These events are even more disturbing because they often involve young people, even teenagers, in possession of prohibited firearms, especially handguns.

Several fixes of scores attributed to the Hells Angels biker group have also been making headlines in recent days in Montreal.
