Things are getting tough with the Quebec solidaire (QS) nomination ride to Taschereau, in the heart of Quebec’s capital. Just four weeks before the vote, the support Catherine Dorion recently offered to candidate Madeleine Cloutier has not left anyone indifferent.

I have some legs […] and poverty, I was only more motivated. Even before asking the inevitable question, candidate Étienne Grandmont discusses for herself how she took the shock. I find it disappointinghe admits, with obvious sincerity.

Mr. Grandmont especially said that he treated Catherine Dorion well. The 44-year-old man, executive director of the Accès transport viable organization, has spoken to the MP on several occasions in recent years.

He didn’t expect him to appear in public, especially to support his opponent. Several party activists also expressed their discomfort at this release from Catherine Dorion.

I know the communication power of the outgoing MP and we can imagine that it could tighten the race, confession of Mr. Grandmont. When these things are said, he prefers to hope.

It changes nothing in our approach. We stayed the course.

A phone blitz

Tuesday night when Mr. Grandmont made these trusts. There are only 48 hours left for QS supporters to get a membership card that will allow them to vote for the Taschereau nomination.

In the apartment of a volunteer from his campaign team, Mr. Grandmont makes a phone blitz with eight other people.

A man sitting at a table, carrying food and a computer.

While every minute counts, a bowl of potato chips, baby carrots, hummus and nuts serves as dinner. Mr. Grandmont would not have time for dinner: then he would have to take part in an air quality meeting at Limoilou.

Whatever. Talking to supporters or, in the worst case, leaving a message in their voicemail can be a game-changer on voting day, and Étienne Grandmont knows it.

It has a certain weight when the candidate picks up the phone and calls. It’s an incentive for people to take action.

It came to re -balance the race

The next day, at the end of the day, Radio-Canada has an appointment with another candidate. Madeleine Cloutier and her team also engaged in a phone blitz with supporters. For him too, the night promises to be long.

The candidate plans to take part in a kitchen meeting with artists from the district, at the Saint-Sacrement neighborhood council, then at the general meeting of the local party association.

I don’t have an end time yet! Probably about 10:30 pm, 11 pm!examines the young spirited 32-year-old woman, with an explosion of well-felt laughter that characterizes her.

Activists from Québec solidaire gathered in one room.

Ms. Alam. Cloutier is what Catherine Dorion’s support represents, but she refutes the idea that it gave new life to her campaign. She’s on her way, she swears.

I don’t have a big wave of activists to follow [la sortie de] Katherine.

On the other hand, he admitted that this support was come to re -balance the race. Rebalancing, because his opponent, Étienne Grandmont, was recruited by the party’s co-spokesperson, Manon Massé.

Some may be tempted to view this as a sign that Etienne Grandmont is the candidate supported by the party’s national authorities, but within the QS, we make sure this is not the case.

Behind the scenes, we understand that QS especially did not want to revive an episode like the by-election in Jean-Talon, in 2019, when Manon Massé supported candidate Frédéric Poitras, which resulted in anger of some local activists.

But whoever supports whom, the current struggle with Taschereau is something positive, Ms. believes. Cloutier. I think it is good for a party and good for democracy to have two quality candidates. It forces us to do our homework, be better and mobilize as many people as possible.

We will be even more prepared for the election this fall.

Two different profiles

Si Ms. Cloutier was none of his first acts of political weaponry. He was the running mate of the leader of Transition Quebec, during the municipal elections in November 2021. He was the only winner for his political party.

When Catherine Dorion announced that she would not run for a second term in Taschereau, therefore there were already activists ready Ms. Cloutier to commit to his side.

Many people followed me in these struggles, seeing in my candidacy a kind of logical progression for Taschereau.

The young woman, who works for the Mobile Museum, identified herself as a candidate for proximity, colorful, from the medium of culture. Another candidate, but one similar to the voters he seeks to represent, he said.

If, in the National Assembly, we have a monolithic bloc of people alike, surely many people will not feel represented, and normally there is a lack of interest associated with that institution if one does not feel represented there.

Étienne Grandmont also stressed her certainty. In 17 years of working with militants and community organizations, he defended the rights of tenants, fought poverty and promoted sustainable mobility.

I have expertise that I can use, and that expertise does not yet exist in the National Assembly.

Although this is his first experience in active politics, Mr. Grandmont is surrounded by an experienced team. Since he already has an extensive network in the field, he believes he can reach as many voters as possible.

I am able to work both on the street, doing demonstrations […] but also in reference to a rainbow of types of peoplehe could think of saying.

Stretch of the house

In the interview, the two candidates clearly showed respect for each other. They will not make a gift on polling day, June 18.

The list of members eligible to vote for the nomination is closed beginning Thursday, 11:59 pm, but there are only four weeks left in the campaign.

None of them wanted to disclose the number of membership cards sold or make a summary analysis of the support they believed they were collecting at this stage.

I am very satisfied so far. I’m so happysimply said Ms. Cloutier. I think we’re doing everything we can, summarizes for his part Mr. Grandmont. A debate is scheduled for June 5.
