The former Olympic gymnast was among 22 close associates of the Russian regime added to the list of sanctions in Ottawa following the ongoing invasion of Vladimir Putin’s troops in Ukraine.

The UK has already imposed sanctions on Ms Kabaeva (New window) earlier this month, and his name will also appear on the draft list of people the European Union could target.

At the time, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly did not rule out taking a similar step, saying Canada wanted to be in tune with its allies when it comes to imposing sanctions on those associated with President Putin.

The latest round of sanctions, which also targets four financial institutions, took effect on Friday.

Canada has so far authorized more than 1,500 individuals and entities since Russia occupied Crimea in 2014.
