Canada Disability Benefit is being offered again in Ottawa

Canada’s Disability Inclusion Minister Carla Qualtrough filed legislation Thursday morning to create the Canadian Disability Benefit.

Such a bill was already filed in June 2021, before dying on the order paper due to the federal election trigger.

The Canada Disability Benefit Act aims to provide monthly benefits to people with disabilities between the ages of 19 and 64.

According to Minister Qualtrough, this will allow significantly reduce poverty and make sure financial security for people with disabilities of working age.

At a press conference, Minister Qualtrough said people under 18 and over 64 were not being neglected, as they benefited respectively from the Canada Child Benefit and the Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

Asked about linking this new federal benefit to current provincial allowances, Minister Qualtrough seemed optimistic and confirmed that negotiations were taking place with the provinces and territories to ensure that provincial allowances would not be reduced by use of this new federal benefit.
