The Conservatives and the NDP are chasing the government on the cost of living

Conservatives and New Democrats in Ottawa on Tuesday urged the government to do more to alleviate the cost of Canada’s living crisis, even if the two parties differ in what they want from the Liberals.

Interim Conservative Leader Candice Bergen has accused Justin Trudeau vindictive in his strong opposition to his party’s proposals in the fight against inflation. He argued that by trying to punish his political party, the Prime Minister was actually punishing Canadians.

The Conservative Party of Canada filed in the House what Ms Bergen called a omnibus motioncalling on the Trudeau government to temporarily suspend the federal tax on gasoline and diesel, as well as carbon pricing, and remove all federal restrictions associated with COVID-19.

New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh said more stringent action needed to be taken against companies profiting from the crisis. He believes the excess revenue from these companies should be redistributed to Canadians in need.

Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said inflation was hitting around the world, largely due to the war in Ukraine, which was raising the cost of fuel and food.

He said his government is already taking action, including making child care places more affordable for Canadian families.

Government House Leader Mark Holland said the Conservatives did the filibuster. He accused the official opposition of only wanting to paralyze the work in the Commons, and acted as if it held the majority in the House.
