Antoine Léaument, Ugo Bernalicis and Hadrien Clouet will pay tribute to Robespierre this Thursday in Arras, on the occasion of the 228th anniversary of his death. Minister Clément Beaune denounced “historical ignorance”.

It is a tribute that does not stop reacting among the political class. Three deputies from La France Insoumise announced on Twitter that they would travel to Arras (Pas-de-Calais) this Thursday to pay tribute to Robespierre, on the occasion of the 228th anniversary of his death.

“Today is 9 Thermidor. Terrible moment. Robespierre is outlawed. The next day he is beheaded without trial. With the deputies Ugo Bernalicis and Hadrien Clouet, therefore, tomorrow we will be in Arras to pay tribute to him. RDV 20 h in the Robespierre house,” LFI deputy for Essonne Antoine Léaument said on Twitter on Wednesday night, accompanied by the decree of the national convention of July 27, 1794, the day the revolutionary was banned.

For Hadrien Clouet, deputy for Haute-Garonne, the event will be an opportunity to pay tribute to “our common France: without slaves, without war, without religious discrimination, where education is free and subsistence guaranteed.”

“historical ignorance”

The announcement of this meeting provoked much criticism, and in particular that of the Minister responsible for Transport, Clément Beaune. “Between political stupidity and historical ignorance…”, he reacted on Twitter.

Because if Robespierre is admired by some, and sometimes cited by the elected representatives of La France Insoumise, he is also a highly criticized figure in French political history. Many remember that “the Incorruptible” was also the instigator of the Terror, a period during which thousands of people were sentenced to death.

Antoine Léaument responded to Clément Beaune’s comment, explaining that “political stupidity and historical ignorance may not be on the side of whom we believe.”

“Robespierre defended the end of slavery, the right to vote for Jews, the right to exist. He fought for everyone to have something to eat. Yes, he deserves a tribute”, added the deputy.

“Long live the First Consul!”, “Long live the Emperor!”, reacted Jean-Philippe Tanguy (RN deputy for Somme) and Julien Odoul (RN deputy for Yonne).

The fact will be supervised by the police this Thursday night in Arras, according to the voice of the north.
