Deputies and senators spoke out this Wednesday against the arrival of former minister Emmanuelle Wargon at the head of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) but did not reach the qualified majority necessary to derail this appointment longed for by the Elysee.
Emmanuelle Wargon received 43 votes in favor and 48 against her appointment to both chambers, according to a count sent by the Senate services.
Except that, according to the constitution, parliamentarians must nonetheless muster “at least three-fifths of the votes cast” to oppose an appointment proposed by the president. In detail, the candidate gathered in the Senate 13 votes in favor, 20 votes against and 1 blank ballot. In the Assembly, his name obtained 30 votes in favor, 28 votes against and 2 abstentions.
“I turned a page”
Emmanuelle Wargon had been proposed in July by the Elysee to preside over the CRE, the independent authority in charge of guaranteeing the proper functioning of the French energy markets “for the benefit of the consumer”, a mission that is even more important now that the crisis in the markets international.
Emmanuelle Wargon, 51, was for the last five years Secretary of State for Ecology (2018-2020), then Minister for Housing (2020-2022). She was a candidate for the Val-de-Marne legislative elections last June, she was defeated in the first round. He will succeed Jean-François Carenco, appointed Minister Delegate for France Overseas, at the head of the CRE.
Heard this Wednesday morning by parliamentarians, he assured them of their independence. “I turned a page, I made a political commitment, this commitment ends with this appointment,” said Emmanuelle Wargon, who says she wants to lead the CRE “in total freedom.”
