At the center of the controversy is the development of work to prepare for the World Cup in Qatar 2022 and arrive in time for the date set for the start of the race. Amnesty International (AI), through a statement, asked this Friday that the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, “addressing human rights issues” relating to abuses against migrant workers in Qatar, “instead of sweeping them under the carpet”.

In a statement, AI reacted to the letter sent this Thursday by Infantino to the federations contributing to the World Cup in Qatar, in which it said that the time has come to talk about football e put politics aside.

If Gianni Infantino wants the world to focus on football, there is a simple solution: FIFA could finally start addressing serious human rights problems instead of hiding them under the carpet, “AI director of economic affairs and social justice Steve Cockburn said, according to the statement.

“A first step would be publicly commit to the institution of a fund to compensate migrant workers before the tournament starts and ensure that LGBTI people do not experience discrimination or harassment… it’s surprising they haven’t done so yet, ”Cockburn added.

Likewise, he held that “Gianni Infantino is right in saying that football does not exist in a vacuum (…) hundreds of thousands of workers have been abused to make this tournament possible and their rights cannot be forgotten or rejected (…) they deserve justice and compensation, not empty words “.

Several human rights organizations, including AI and Human Rights Watch, insist that Qatar and FIFA create a reparation fund to compensate thousands of migrant employees who suffered “severe abuse” in preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The organizations recognize the social and labor reforms introduced by the Qatari authorities in recent years, although they believe that for many workers these reforms have arrived too late and have only been partially implemented.
