There are only two weeks left to start Qatar World Cup 2022. dream of seeing Leone Messi and the company that raises the gold trophy in the eastern country is on the agenda. But even the most passionate can put the cold clothes on the highly anticipated preview. “We have big dreams, but we have to go step by step“, He says Giovanni Paolo Sorin a Clarione. The former winger and former captain of the Argentine national team is no stranger to popular sentiment. But he knows what it means to play a World Cup, he knows the weight of representing his country and, curiously, he has already done so in Qatar.
The former footballer will be present this afternoon at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival to present, from 7:30 pm, his documentary film “Once upon a time in Qatar”. He will be accompanied by his wife, Sol Alac, and by directors Federico Rotstein and Ignacio Ceroi. The film tells the adventure of the historic Sub 20 Selection, directed by José Pekerman, consecrated in the Arab country 27 years ago. An event that changed the lives of these kids forever.
A long time has passed since then and fate – and the decisions of FIFA – meant that this year’s World Cup was to be played in the Arab country in an unusual month. But that Qatar is not the same that millions of people will visit in two weeks to participate in the most important football event in the world. Everything has changed, except the illusion of being a champion.
“I think we have to proceed little by little,” he anticipates Sorin in a telephone conversation with Clarione. And he does his analysis of a team in search of glory: “Argentina must build its candidacy, logically it comes very well and very strong“.
For the former footballer, now present in the national and international media as a communicator, Argentina’s great present “has to do with the functioning that has been achieved on the pitch and the coexistence that has taken place outside”.
A good group atmosphere is essential for things to happen naturally on the playing field. “This is reflected in every match and in every post on social networks, or in every image you see of the national team”, completes the former winger. And he continues: “This is what led to this bond with people. Logically the title after 28 years has helped a lot, but it is also the way of playing and the way in which the players give themselves and express themselves. can achieve with his dream, which is to play a World Cup “.
-How do you see the Argentine national team?
-If we remember the last trial before the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Argentina comes in a completely different way. There is a belief in how he plays. We all know what the style of this national team is and how it has grown from the friendly ones, passing through the Copa América 2019 where Argentina has already shown where they wanted to go. And he found in this spectacular renewal, which Lionel Scaloni sought and created with Pablo Aimar, Roberto Ayala and Walter Samuel, players who perhaps did not have much experience and who suddenly in a very short time ended up being fundamental pieces. And they are. There is no need to name them because luckily we already know them by heart. It is not just a team of eleven players, but a very strong group and they seem very united.
-What do you think of the group that touched us?
-It is a group that seems more accessible, but there are three teams with different styles and you have to be very careful. Whether it’s the speed on the counterattack of Arabia or the dizziness that Mexico can have, the way their league is, or even Robert Lewandowski and the way they attack Poland, who are a team with good foot.
-Being a connoisseur of the position … How do you see the national teams?
-I see them very well, with different characteristics. The two contributed a lot to Argentina being champions of America and qualifying as they did in this World Cup, with authority. Both have shown their importance and everything they can offer to the Argentine national team and this makes me very happy. Either on the left side or on the right side with Gonzalo Montiel and Nahuel Molina. I think we have variations on the sides. We also got behind with the skin (Romero) and Otamendi, but there is also Pezzella. So this speaks of the fact that a group has been formed and I imagine that for Scaloni it must not be easy to choose 26, in addition to the injured ones, because there are excellent players in the world who can represent Argentina. Also the case of Julián Álvarez: every time we look, he scores a goal. This makes us very proud and we have to commend the work he has been doing for a long time.
-You’ve known them for a long time … What about Scaloni?
-We were team mates in 2006 in that World Cup in Germany. Lionel has always been a character. I think that good humor, that way of being has always involved him well in the groups and he also did the same thing as the coach of the national team, beyond the seriousness and professionalism of being the technical director that led us to be champions. a long time. And if he deserves it, and all the guys I mentioned earlier along with the coaching staff, what we all dream of. But it is based on the effort, on everything we have had to undergo and undergo with the shirt. The coaches know what they are talking about because they have lived through many circumstances as players, including a World Cup.
-What do you think of this great gift from Lionel Messi?
I am very happy for Leo. You deserve this and more. How did you grow as a leader? The way he has evolved in every way with the Argentine shirt is brilliant and spectacular. To speak from football there are no words. For his constant genius, being an alien and always wanting to be the best. This is for very few in the history of football. I don’t think there are cases like Leo’s in the history of football. From being the best player every time a season ends, to being the top scorer or the one with the most assists. And I think it has to do with his mentality. Always wanting to be the protagonist. Know that it can be decisive and prepare for it. And when things don’t work out, he keeps fighting and dedicating you. Let’s hope it’s a great Leo World Cup. I am really happy for him and his family. When he started I had the privilege and pleasure of playing alongside him.

“In times full of confrontation and individualism, Once upon a time in Qatar invites the spectator to learn about the adventure of a group of young Argentines, Brazilians and Spaniards who played a World Cup in an unknown land “, reads the official statement by Elis Productora.
Giovanni Paolo Sorin recalls that epic in the lands of Qatar and eagerly anticipates the film: “You will see a story of teenagers who have to carry a huge and at the same time beautiful responsibility, which is to represent their national team.“.
And he adds: “Even guys who are going on a journey of initiation. And they are living their first time as national team players and going through many circumstances until they reach that World Cup in Qatar”.
“And when I say players, they are not only Argentines, but also Brazilians and Spaniards, since they were the great candidates to win. In addition to the testimonies, they will see fiction and spectacular archive images of those years. And the unreleased records thanks to Raúl Lamas who filmed with his camera and also to maestro Gerardo Salorio. Those VHS images are incredible. This is also a context of the 90s. How we dressed, what music we listened to, the complicity behind closed doors. film, “adds the former Argentina winger.
-What did that U20 World Cup mean personally?
-As the documentary motto on the poster says: that World Cup changed our lives. It has to do with all the difficulties we had to face, because it was the first national team in the era of José Pekerman and all his coaching staff. Argentina had just been suspended from the ’93 World Cup for indiscipline and had to be given a different image. So somehow we had to go through that change and at the same time adapt and be mature to take on that responsibility. And during the trip, in addition to the responsibility of assuming it, we had to experience many things. Logically having conquered it and being world champions after 16 years was the most important title of my life, beyond the great successes I have had with the clubs.
-What Qatar did you meet 27 years ago?
-27 years ago it was completely different, I think that’s the richness of the documentary, because we show a very low Qatar in its construction. With a few newly started buildings, including the hotels where we needed to stop. One of the things you see is that almost all the delegations were together, some cranes and then desert, sea, fairs and little more. At this point there is the great contrast with Qatar that we see now in the series, in documentaries, in the news and with what we will find in a few days.
-How did you experience your new role as a film producer?
-Elis Productora was born many years ago and we have produced different formats. We made several TV shows like “ESPN review“For Brazil and”It is played at home”, And now, after so many different formats, we dare to make this film. And we are already showing how we want to tackle this new phase. On a very clear human side, from emotion and sensitivity. But also from the image quality. I am very grateful to the whole team who joined and fell in love with the project. We worked hard, we went against the clock and we are very happy to open such a prestigious festival with free admission. Both on my Instagram account (@ jpsorin6) and on that of the production company (@elisprodutora) we always upload news about the film. After Mar del Plata, the documentary can be seen in KINEMAPfootthe Brazilian film festival, on November 21 in Rio de Janeiro.
