MLS said on Friday that Pavón should have been classified as a designated player, which counts only in part towards the salary cap.

Klein has been suspended for the entire initial transfer period, which usually lasts until early May.

Head coach Greg Vanney will serve as athletic director during Klein’s suspension, reporting to Dan Beckerman, president of parent company Anschutz Entertainment Group.

Pavón joined Argentina’s Boca Juniors Galaxy on loan and the MLS Players Association reported he would have a salary of $1.2 million in 2019.

Galaxy tried to re-sign him ahead of the 2021 season, but Pavón was accused of sexual harassment in his native Argentina when the club was negotiating his outright takeover with Boca Juniors.

Pavón scored 14 goals in 35 regular season games for the Galaxy and returned to play for Boca Juniors in April 2021. The 26-year-old player was released in July last year and has his continuity at Atlético arranged Mines in Brazil.

“The Los Angeles Galaxy entered into undisclosed deals that included payments that did not count towards the salary budget calculation and Cristian Pavón’s category in the team,” the MLS statement read.

“Due to undisclosed deals and payments, Pavón was incorrectly classified as a cash allotment player in 2019 and was expected to fill a designated player spot.”

An MLS team may use general appropriation money to “reduce” the charge from a player’s salary budget.

Allocation money can be used to sign new players whose salary and acquisition cost exceed the maximum salary amount or to convert a designated player into a non-designated one.
