Few details are still known about the death of Grant Wahl, the famous American sports journalist who lost his life after passing out at the Lusail stadium, while covering the match between the Argentina national team and the Netherlands, for the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar 2022.

Among many doubts, however, one certainty stands out: He has come to see, at least, the heartbreaking tie of those led by Louis van Gaal in the last minute of the second half. This can be established thanks to a series of appreciations he wrote on his Twitter account while the Argentinians and the Dutch faced each other in search of a place in the semifinals.

Lionel Messi -Who else?- was the footballer Grant believed deserved his first rating. It happened after 34 minutes, when Leo came up with one of those millimeter assists we’re already used to and allowed Nahuel Molina, the lane that defined nine from the area, to sanction the 1-0.

My God, what a ball from Messi”, expressed Grant, precise and concise. And he has not forgotten his role in the chronicle: “Argentina leads”.

The second time he took his eyes off the match to upload a tweet with his mobile phone was after the penalty against Marco Acuna, 15 minutes into the second half. Exactly one hour and one minute passed between the two posts.

I have not been a fan of Acuña in this World Cupbut that was an inspired dribble to get a penalty when he could have given the ball to Messi,” he remarked.

Their third tweet didn’t wait too long. “We are making the film of the policeman friend of Luuk de Jong / Outside Weghorst from Holland to finish this,” he wrote as Weghorst converted with a header to put himself in suspense in the closing minutes. At that point, the Dutch started to take control of the game and turned any ball that went through their feet into a center.

For the first time he made a publication that had nothing to do with a goal. It was the vehement game of Leandro Paredes which finished cutting the game. The PSG midfielder first recovered without a foul, then came on late and hit Nathan Aké vehemently and finally, after questioning referee Mateu Lahoz sanctioned the foul, struck a ball point blank against the substitutes of the Naranyah. There were pushes, insults and tags.

“Leandro Paredes is always the opposite of a calming influence. I have no idea how he is still on the pitch,” said the American reporter, who considered Paredes’ action red.

When the 2-2 draw came, Grant reacted like the vast majority of Argentines. Astonishment and incomprehension. “What happened?“, he tweeted. A phrase that thousands of fans will have screamed, with some bitches in between. Three minutes later, when he found the right words, he answered his own question: “Just a perfectly engineered free-kick goal from the Netherlands.”

This is the last tweet that appears on his profile.
