The Justice of France sentenced this Tuesday to prison sentences outstanding the president of the French Rugby Federation (FFR), Bernardo Laporteand the businessman Mohed Altrad for weaving a covenant of corruption in 2017.
The correctional court of Paris sentenced Laporte to two years in prison with a suspended sentence and a fine of 75,000 euros ($79,900) for favoring Altrad in a series of decisions.
One of them was the shirt sponsorship of the French team, with which he agreed a secret image contract which resulted in the payment without compensation of 180,000 euros ($191,000) in 2017.
For these same facts, the chairman of the Altrad group and owner of the Montpellier Hérault Rugby (MHR) club was sentenced to 18 months in prison suspended and a fine of 50,000 euros ($53,200).
Convicted of bribery and influence trafficking, the president of the FFR He is also prohibited from holding any position in the world of rugby for two years, sentence suspended on appeal.
His lawyer, Jean-Pierre Versini-Campinchi, told AFP that he will appeal against the sentence. Altrad’s lawyer, Antoine Vey, instead assured that they will study the verdict before deciding whether to appeal.
For Justice, the corruption was confirmed with the award of the first Les Bleus shirt sponsorship contract to the Altrad Group in 2018, in a process that angered the team’s long-time partners.
The head of the FFR since 2016 has also been found guilty of repeatedly favoring Altrad’s MHR club to reduce a disciplinary penalty or confirm the two-game postponement.
