Szymon Marciniak will be the referee of the final of the Qatar 2022 World Cup which will be played next Sunday at the Lusail stadium by the coaches of Argentina and France, according to what was announced today by the Polish football federation.
Through an official press release, the federation anticipated FIFA’s announcement and reported that Marciniak will be the first Polish referee to referee a World Cup final.
The referee was already at the match between Argentina and Australia for the round of 16. In that match, the Pole and the VAR did not consider a hand in the ocean area which could have been an infringement and a penalty in favor of the team led by Lionel Scaloni.
The shortlist will be completed by assistants Paweł Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz.
The data highlighted in the press release from the Polish federation is that Michal Listkiewicz, the current head of the institution, was a linesman in the 1990 Italy final which also saw Argentina against Germany.
Now it remains official on the part of FIFA, but the Polish Marciniak was one of the candidates managed by the FIFA Arbitration Committee chaired by the Italian Pierluigi Collina.
The Polish Szymon Marciniak already led the national team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the day on which the team led by Jorge Sampaoli made its debut against Iceland. It was a disappointing 1-1 draw with a penalty that Lionel Messi failed to convert into a goal but with another controversial play.
Former Boca Cristian Pavón fell in the Nordic team area but the judge did not buy and decided not to sanction a penalty in favor of Argentina.
