It is a day of strong emotions for the Argentine public at the Lusail stadium in Doha and in every corner where an Argentine or an Argentine has settled down to follow the World Cup final between Lionel Messi’s national team and France. But the first big emotion on Sunday came from the hand of Diego Maradona.
FIFA has paid tribute to the world champion footballers who died between the 2018 World Cup in Russia and this event in Qatar. The Argentines appeared René Houseman, Rubén Galván Leopoldo Jacinto Luque, José Luis el Tata Brown and last was Maradona in his memorable run against England in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Mexico and subsequently lifting the World Cup.
It was an “In memorial” as is done at the Oscars, in Hollywood, but with the soccer champions and in the World Cup final. It is the first to be played since Maradona’s death on November 25, 2020. Diego had been – as always – close to the 2018 Russia national team.
Also remembered were the Brazilian Altair, the Englishman Jackie Charlton, Gordon Banks, Ray Wilson, Norman Hunter -among others-; the German Gerd Müller and the Italian Paolo Rossi.
