After the defeat of the French team in the World Cup final against Argentina, the French president Emmanuel Macron shared a message on Twitter to thank the players.
“The ‘Bleus’ made us dream”tweeted Macron, who watched in the stands the defeat of the French against Argentina on penalties.
Lionel Messi’s side defeated Kylian Mbappé’s side on penalties, after a 3-3 draw after extra time capped off a breathtaking game in Qatar. Emiliano Dibu Martínez turned up for penalties, saving a shot to make it 4-2.
Macron was on the pitch and came down to the awards ceremony to hang the silver medal from the players. Even consoled a Kylian Mbappé who scored three goals but he could not avoid defeat.
The cameras showed how Macron squatted down to have a little chat with the French star, to which he also gave hugs.
After trying to console Mbappé, who remained seated a little longer and dejected with his gaze turned to infinity, Macron greeted coach Didier Deschamps and other French players.
Macron was in the pits at the Lusail stadium. During the week he had invited his partner Alberto Fernández, to attend the final, but decided to decline the invitation and stayed to watch the game in Olivos.
The television images that periodically focused on the area showed an initially energetic Macron – who clenched his fist to the song of the Marseillaise before starting the game – and then applauded happily at Mbappé’s first goal which gave hope to the French.
Subsequently, the French president attended the trophy presentation ceremony, together with the Sheikh of Qatar, Tamim ben Hamad Al Thani, and the president of Fifa, Gianni Infantino.
